Preview of the free crochet abbreviations cheat sheet: two columns of abbreviations with meanings and UK words, plus pattern symbols
A preview of the sheet. The PDF prints crisp at any size.

On the sheet

  • 43 common abbreviations with plain meanings
  • The UK word wherever a UK pattern says it differently
  • What the symbols *, [ ] and ( ) mean in a pattern

Reading the short forms

Each short form stands for a stitch or a step. sc2tog, for example, means single crochet 2 together. Designers sometimes add their own abbreviations, so check the key at the start of your pattern too.

Using a UK pattern?

UK patterns name each stitch one step up, so a UK dc is a US sc. The UK column on the sheet shows the word to look for. For every pair in both directions, get the free US and UK crochet terms chart.

Stitch Scroll on a phone: round 5 of a sea turtle pattern, the stitches to work, and a big Row done button

Counting rows? Stitch Scroll keeps your place.

Stitch Scroll reads the knitting or crochet pattern you own and turns it into rows you count with a tap. It checks the stitch counts row by row before you start, so a slip in the pattern shows up early. Tap any stitch, like sc or inc, to see what it means. The pattern's own abbreviations list comes first.
